Werben Castle was first mentioned in documents in 1005. The town was granted town rights in 1151. With just under 700 inhabitants in the core area, Werben is the smallest Hanseatic town in the world.

The Krumke Castle Park is one of Saxony-Anhalt's "Garden Dream Parks". The park is freely accessible and can be visited free of charge. The park is home to a rarity: it is said to have the oldest boxwood hedge in Europe.
