Mining was already taking place here in Roman times. From 1941 onwards it was no longer profitable to operate such small mines!

The current image of the mines dates back to around 1900, when the ore was mined in open-cast mines. Some of the older tunnels can still be seen in the impressive open-cast mine walls. The minerals known from there were found in the open-cast mines. However, here too, some of the valuable sites were completely mined by collectors a long time ago. The dumps no longer exist; they fell victim to the leaching process and the construction of the military airfield in Sembach. https://www.mineralienfreunde-der-pfalz.de/fundstellen/bergwerke/imsbach/katharina1

The lightning tubes are a natural monument in the form of a mineralogical phenomenon in the sandstone wall below the Battenberg castle ruins. The 'lightning tubes' were given their name because the people who lived here initially attributed their formation to lightning strikes. The Börrstadt hermit hermitage is a chapel hewn into the rock, with the remains of an earlier dwelling, at the foot of the Donnersberg, west of the Hahnweilerhof, which belongs to the municipality of Börrstadt. Wikipedia

Small cave - however, swarms of insects came towards us, so that we quickly turned around

This pit was created in the mid 1770s. The last mining activities took place in 1941. It has been open to the public since 2006. Source: www.bew-imsbach.de/index.php/de/bergwerke/besucherbergwerke/grube-maria

Absolute recommendation. I saw the flash tubes on ZDF's Terra X. So I wanted to hike and see them myself. Amazing what mother nature creates. ❤️

I liked this explanation from the Pfalzmuseum für Naturkunde in DÜW (according to the information board on site) best for this phenomenon: "Water that had dissolved iron-containing substances penetrated the layers of sand. The iron that was carried along was excreted in shells (concentrically) and transformed the loose sand in the area of the deposit into solid sandstone, which can contain up to 30% iron."

Man has left real wounds in nature here. Still, it fascinates me. The abandoned pits are likely to be a habitat for some wild animals and insects. It was just rustling from lizards. Unfortunately, none made it in the photo. Too fast or me too impatient? Who knows!

Interesting stone formations below the Battenburg - it was once assumed that the stones were formed by lightning.

The "White Pit" is one of the oldest pits in the area. Mainly copper ores and in the 18th century mainly cobalt were extracted here. However, mining could have been practiced as early as Roman times. In the 18th century there was a "silver shaft" and in 1921 a mining field was awarded on silver due to silver finds in the "Elisabethenstollen". However, the deposit was not worth mining. In the last operating periods, lye ore was recovered here - mainly in open-cast mining. However, the transport to the leaching facility was more difficult because there was no mine railway. https://www.bew-imsbach.de/index.php/de/bergwerke/besucherbergwerke/weisse-grube
