The lightning tubes are a natural monument in the form of a mineralogical phenomenon in the sandstone wall below the Battenberg castle ruins. The 'lightning tubes' were given their name because the people who lived here initially attributed their formation to lightning strikes. This is one of over 300 knight's stones of the Palatinate Forest Association. He points (with his arrow) to an approximately 30 square meter small cave "on the northern slope of the Höllenberg" and "in the Hohfels in the tertiary limestone reef": https://www.komoot.de/highlight/1137121 Excavations show evidence of: -> "Human occurrence in the period around 40,000 BC (Upper Paleolithic) to around 5,000 BC (Upper Palaeolithic)" -> Human burials in the early and high Middle Ages “The cave is now no longer accessible due to the risk of collapse. The path there is also overgrown with hedges and it is impossible to get through.” Source (partly quoted verbatim): https://www.kuladig.de/ Objektansicht/KLD-343754

Absolute recommendation. I saw the flash tubes on ZDF's Terra X. So I wanted to hike and see them myself. Amazing what mother nature creates. ❤️

I liked this explanation from the Pfalzmuseum für Naturkunde in DÜW (according to the information board on site) best for this phenomenon: "Water that had dissolved iron-containing substances penetrated the layers of sand. The iron that was carried along was excreted in shells (concentrically) and transformed the loose sand in the area of the deposit into solid sandstone, which can contain up to 30% iron."

The first part of the hike unfortunately leads on relatively much asphalted paths, but the second part is all the more beautiful - there is a lot of pristine nature between these rocks - and at the end it is definitely worth a visit to Herxheim next to the winegrowers' cooperative The wine lounge is definitely highly recommended - the most wonderful view, pleasant ambience, very good cuisine and delicious wines round off this hike

On site you can only see a large square and an information board with very interesting photos and texts. In the underground there is a (now) closed cave, which is known for its geological and archaeological finds. This cave was formed many millions of years ago when the limestone of a sea limestone reef was washed out here. Source: https://www.urlaubsregion-freinsheim.de/de/sehenswuerdigkeit/herxheim-am-berg-karsthoehle The area here is currently cordoned off with tree trunks so that no tractors, cars or larger groups drive or enter the area, because according to a report by the State Office for Geology, the Herxheim karst cave is in danger of collapsing. Interesting stone formations below the Battenburg - it was once assumed that the stones were formed by lightning.

Very imposing rock formations, which are very difficult to see because they are on a very narrow and busy winding road.

Below the castle ruins are the so-called "lightning tubes" made of ochre-colored sandstone, which have been classified as a natural monument. They were given this name because their formation was initially attributed to lightning strikes. Scientific research has, however, refuted this assumption, so that the geological rarity is now considered a mineralogical phenomenon that is due to sintering and erosion. (Source: wiki) Very impressive and particularly pretty at the moment with the poppy flowers in between. ‼️Please be careful, as it is located directly on a winding road‼️
