    The Hohfels also called "high rock", is a tertiary limestone reef with an open to the east cave, which also has an opening to the top and the mountain side has a narrow passage. Due to the strong growth of shrubs on the marly mixture of clay and finely divided lime around the eastern side of the excavated limestone, it is not easy to get to the karstified cave. Getting there is difficult, but not impossible, because from the Ritterstein on the wine trail always straight ahead you will find after about 200 meters a narrow path through the bushes cut trail.

            This is one of over 300 knight's stones of the Palatinate Forest Association.

            He points (with his arrow) to an approximately 30 square meter small cave "on the northern slope of the Höllenberg" and "in the Hohfels in the tertiary limestone reef": komoot.de/highlight/1137121

            Excavations show evidence of:

            -> "Human occurrence in the period around 40,000 BC (Upper Paleolithic) to around 5,000 BC (Upper Palaeolithic)"

            -> Human burials in the early and high Middle Ages

            “The cave is now no longer accessible due to the risk of collapse. The path there is also overgrown with hedges and it is impossible to get through.”
