The Haze Cave is unique in Germany. It is located on the site of a former quarry where red sandstone was extracted in the 17th century. Quarry workers noticed a "haze" at a certain depth that caused people to faint. Dead birds were repeatedly found in the pit. Well doctor Dr. Johann Philipp Seip came to Pyrmont in 1712 and investigated the phenomenon. He suspected it was sulfur vapor. Carbon dioxide (CO2) was only discovered a few years later as atmospheric acid. The metal half-shells symbolize the numerous springs in Bad Pyrmont.

History Count Friedrich VI of Spiegelberg, who had been sovereign of the County of Pyrmont since 1525, built a fortress with a residential building on top in the valley of Pyrmont between 1526 and 1536. As early as 1512, he had the ancestral seat of the Counts of Spiegelberg in Coppenbrügge converted into a contemporary fortress based on the Italian model. He used the experience he gained to build a fortress in Pyrmont as well. The almost square complex covered four and a half hectares and was surrounded by a 30 to 40 meter wide moat, a moat. The earth that accrued when digging the moat was piled up to build the castle wall with casemates incorporated into it. In the north, where the fortress was most vulnerable to attack, a small stone corner bastion was built. The entrance to the fortress was only accessible via a wooden drawbridge and the entrance tunnel was.

Pyrmont Castle with its impressive square moat was once the residence of the Count of Spiegelberg and now houses a museum. An imposing building from the outside too.

The haze cave is on the site of a former quarry where red sandstone was quarried in the 17th century. Quarry workers noticed a "haze" at a certain depth that caused people to faint. Again and again dead birds and animals were found in the pit. When the well-known well doctor Dr. Johann Philipp Seip came to Pyrmont in 1712 and got to the bottom of the apparitions. He assumed it was sulfur vapor. Carbon dioxide (CO2) was only discovered as atmospheric acid a few years later. In self-experiments, through "repeated sweating and drawing in the sulphurous fumes", Seip found out that this does not contain any toxic substances. With the permission of Prince Friedrich Anton Ulrich zu Waldeck von Pyrmont, he had a stone vault built over the steaming pit in 1720. Above it is a small building, about "6 shoes square and 10 shoes high", to prepare a dry bath for spa guests. However, the dry weld pool could not be used continuously because of the non-constant level of carbon dioxide. Seip, on the other hand, found that people of all walks of life "vaunt good recovery and help against swelling of the feet, gout pains and stiffness of the limbs". So.... The Gauss Grotto is named after a son of the well-known mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777-1855). Gauss Jr. lived in Hamelin on the Breiter Weg. He had this forest path, which was once named after him, laid out on the south side of the Klütberg. The haze cave in Bad Pyrmont is a brick grotto from which carbon dioxide flows. After the Hundsgrotte near Naples was walled up after the Second World War, it is the only cave of this kind in Europe. At the beginning of the 18th century, workers noticed that gas was escaping from the quarry rock. If they got near the gas leaks, they would faint after a while. When it rained heavily, the carbonic acid rose from the rainwater in the form of bubbles. Dead birds and other dead animals were often found near the gas wells. In 1712, the fountain doctor Johann Philipp Seip came to Pyrmont and got to the bottom of this natural phenomenon. Due to the suffocating properties of the gas, Seip initially assumed that the gas was sulfur gas. Source: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunsth%C3%B6hle

The vapor cave should definitely be visited - the last natural spectacle of its kind in Europe. Only possible with a guided tour, the price is 1.50 euros for adults. Absolutely interesting, great tour with great explanations. More is not revealed, so that the wow effect is greater!
