The fire pond on the Mühlenbach stream lies idyllically in the Bückeberg hills and is a tranquil, natural spot amidst the wooded hills. Fed by the Mühlenbach, the pond blends harmoniously into its surroundings and is now an integral part of the landscape of this region. Surrounded by trees and gentle hills, it invites hikers and walkers to take a short break and offers a peaceful place to enjoy nature. The pond owes its name to its original function as a water reservoir for firefighting. In times before centralized water supplies, such fire ponds were of great importance, especially in heavily forested areas. They provided readily available water for firefighting in emergencies, thus contributing to the protection of the surrounding villages and forests. Today, the fire pond is primarily of ecological and scenic significance. It provides habitat for amphibians, insects, and waterfowl and contributes to the diversity of flora and fauna in the Bückeberg hills. At the same time, it is a quiet meeting point in the region's network of hiking trails and uniquely combines nature, history and recreation in one of the most beautiful forest landscapes of the Schaumburg region.

The Hohenrode Floodplain Nature Reserve is an ecological highlight in the Weser Valley near Rinteln and an excellent destination for nature-loving cyclists. This fascinating landscape stretches across an area of approximately 127 hectares in a bend of the Weser River – a successful example of renaturation and sustainable nature conservation in a former gravel mining area. Since the 1990s, the floodplain landscape has been managed by the NABU Rinteln group. What was once an industrial mining site has been transformed into a mosaic of shallow water zones, gravel pits, islands, oxbow lakes, and riparian forests. This diversity has created an important refuge for numerous endangered animal and plant species. The area is particularly known for its rich birdlife: Common terns, white-tailed eagles, ospreys, black storks, and waders find breeding or resting sites here. An ornithological highlight is the successful reintroduction of the common tern, which is breeding here for the first time in over 100 years. Visitors can use an observation tower and the Dieter Eggersmann observation hut, from which animals can be observed in their natural habitat. Information panels explain the special features of the habitat, its history, and the contribution of the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU) to the maintenance and development of the protected area. The play of light over the still waters is particularly impressive in the early morning hours or at sunset. The floodplain landscape is located directly on the Weser Cycle Route and is therefore perfect as a stopover or destination for a nature-oriented bike ride. Access is via a gravel parking lot near Hohenrode. NABU offers regular guided tours of the area – on the first Sunday of even-numbered months at 11 a.m. Those who want to experience the slow change of nature and understand the dynamics of a river landscape will find in the Hohenrode floodplain landscape an inspiring example of how nature can be left to its own devices and still be full of life – ideal for a peaceful break on the bike.

Meanwhile, the path connecting the two lakes is so overgrown that it is difficult to drive along it

The water ski facility Stemmen (Kalletal) between Varenholz Castle or ferry terminal and the Stemmen campsite or Möllenbeck Monastery is a good place for fans of this sport. Of course, you can also just watch the active people from the footpath and cycle path or from the café terrace as they do their rounds or go swimming involuntarily. The season usually runs from the end of March/beginning of April (Easter) to the beginning/mid of October (October 3/Day of German Unity); depending on the weather conditions also shorter. Please note: Outside the opening hours, the gates to the site are closed, so the bike path there is also not passable‼️🚴♂️🚴♀️‼️

Very nice section! If you really want to experience nature in peace here, you should switch to off-peak times or days outside of the weekend if possible. On nice weather weekends there is often a big tumult of cyclists and walkers.

You know when! If you want to use the cycle path at the Stemmen water ski facility (in the municipality of Kalletal), as is the norm, you should limit this to the operating times of the same if possible. Outside of these times, you are literally in front of closed gates.🙈😪 At least there is a sign in a friendly tone😊 pointing to a detour route that is easy to drive on and not too long🚴♀️🚴♂️. Fortunately, in contrast to the gravel run through the water ski area, it is paved throughout. 😊👍

The path is very easy to ride by bike, so you can sometimes ride side by side.

These are two lakes separated by a narrow dam. The border with North Rhine-Westphalia runs directly along the northern bank. The western lake is called Gevattersee or Gevattersee I, the eastern one, which is slightly smaller at 19 hectares, is called Gevattersee II or Gevattersee 2. Until 2010, the lake was used extensively for bathing, but bathing was banned due to the overwhelming problem of waste. Source: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gevattersee
