A relatively small building for a castle, but its half-timbered construction is beautiful and very well restored.

The Nienburg is a hill fort used in prehistory and in the Middle Ages in the Aller valley south-east of the Altencelle district. The excavations have so far not been able to clarify the history of the fortification. Ceramic finds prove that the place was settled in the 15th century BC. A farmstead from the pre-Roman Iron Age was also excavated. The Middle Ages are represented by the excavated building and a few pottery sherds that cannot be clearly dated. What has been handed down, however, is that in modern times the area was used as a training hill for gunners and in 1757 during the Seven Years' War for a French gun emplacement. Source: Wikipedia
