If you are on the cycle path from Großmunzel to Ostermunzel, you will come to an impressive natural monument, the Ostermunzel boulder. The boulder lies on the "Hohen Saalfeld", as the Mühlenberg (67.5 m) is also called. The rock was discovered by a farmer while plowing in autumn 2013. It has a circumference of around 10 m, is around 2.60 m high and around 3.20 m wide. Its weight is 27.5 tons. The age is estimated between one and two billion years. The boulder, made of gneiss, probably comes from southern Sweden and migrated to its present location during the Saale Ice Age, i.e. around 200,000 to 250,000 years ago.
