Two larger pits are witnesses to Löhndorf's mining past. While the larger pit of the "Henriette" iron mine has been largely filled in, an idyllic biotope has been created in the smaller pit through rainwater.

Four old ponds lie along the path as if strung on a pearl necklace. It's quiet here and perfect for a little rest.

The Königssee is 1 ha in size and 30 meters deep. Here tertiary basalt rock was mined until 1942, which was broken into gravel. The Königssee, filled with groundwater, developed from the mining pit. The basalt rock was brought to crushing plants in Oberzissen via a cable car. The gravel was brought from the Brohltalbahn to the Rhine port for shipment.

The Königssee is a former basalt mine. Until 1942, the material was mined here and crushed to gravel. Then the mining stopped and the pit filled with groundwater. You can still see the quarries on the steep banks. A small path leads down to the idyllic lake. Here you will find a quiet place for your picnic or a short break. However, you have to refrain from bathing or fishing, because this has not been allowed for several years.

The Eifel ladder leads around the Königssee. However, the lake is so idyllic that you should definitely visit it. The lake is accessible to hikers all year round (see https://www.eifel.info/a-koenigssee), but camping or swimming is prohibited. There is also a geological hiking trail around the lake.
