The small and large cow troughs are not natural ponds, but rather a clay pit from the 18th century. Because this soil does not allow water to pass through, a pond was created that used to provide water for people and especially animals. Since settlers used the forest as pasture, they called the watering hole “cow trough”.

It is a paradise for cyclists, a course for walkers and joggers, an ecological niche, awarded a first prize and the only park in Regensburg where anglers can be found. The Donaupark - at around 40 hectares the second largest of Regensburg's parks after Aubachpark - extends over 65 hectares in the outer west of the city.
