Above the fountain basin rises a group of boulders with a portrait of Matthias Kraus in the center piece. The memorial commemorates the Kraus uprising in 1705. It was erected in 1905 for the 33-year-old master butcher from Kelheim. From 1704 Kelheim was under Austrian occupation; In 1705, however, Kraus surrendered to the occupying forces, threw them out of the city and, as "city commander", demanded the full support of the city council and citizens. Among these, however, opinion was divided. Kraus capitulated - on condition of an honorable deduction and mercy for the citizens.
