The Steinburg near Nannendorp – today Franzdorf – and Linau Castle were already mentioned in 1291 as the seat of the Scharpenberg Knights, who are notorious in Lauenburg's history for their numerous knightly feuds. In 1349, the Lübeckers attacked the Scharpenberg "robber barons" and, within 10 days, conquered and destroyed eight knights' castles in Lauenburg, including the Steinburg.

The Tremsbüttel Manor, also known as Tremsbüttel Castle, is a historic building in Tremsbüttel, Schleswig-Holstein. It was originally built as a manor house for a noble estate and is often referred to as a castle due to its castle-like appearance. The manor has a varied history with various uses, including a hotel until 2020 and a private clinic starting in 2023.

It's no longer worth a visit, as the castle can only be viewed from a distance through the fence. The gardens are also no longer open to visitors.

Here in the forest northwest of Franzdorf lie the remains of a medieval castle. However, only the remains of the ramparts and ditches remain, as well as some debris from fieldstone walls or foundations. The complex has a diameter of around 40m and stands out clearly from the otherwise flat landscape. Interestingly, the castle ruins lie exactly on the district border, i.e. on the border of the former duchies of Holstein and Lauenburg. The castle also gives its name to the municipality of Steinburg, which was created in 1978 from the merger of Eichede, Mollhagen and Sprenge. Coming from the direction of Mollhagen or Sprenge, the forest path appears to end here. For experienced mountain bikers, however, it should not be a problem to overcome the ramparts and ditches and continue the path on the other side towards Franzdorf.

It is not possible to take photographs through the fence; the castle grounds and the park are not accessible, as a private clinic is now located there.

Even if it cannot be seen on the map, you can connect the two paths. Walking every once in a while, I've already done it on my bike, but it takes strength to push the bike up the mountain.

Tremsbüttel Castle is located in the Stormarn district in southern Schleswig-Holstein. As the residential building of a former noble estate, it is actually a mansion, but has been called a castle for some time due to its castle-like shape. The building from the late 19th century has housed a hotel since the estate's liquidation and is therefore open to its guests, the park is freely accessible all year round.

Today's "Schloss" Tralau is the successor to a medieval moated castle and a two-storey manor house built at the beginning of the 19th century . The house is more of a typical Wilhelminian style villa and has a castle-like appearance. Simply great to look at. You can drive past the gate on the street, but the site is privately owned

The Tralau manor house is one of the most beautiful buildings in the area due to its external appearance. The architectural style combines neo-renaissance, Gothic, and Art Nouveau with historicism. Because of this, it is often referred to as a fairytale castle. The first settlement in the area dates back to the 12th century. An estate and castle were built on this site, whose owners changed several times in the following centuries. In addition to knights' families, various dukes also lived in the Tralau complex. The current Traulau manor house was not built until 1890. During the Second World War, the house was temporarily used as refugee accommodation and later as a retirement home. The estate was divided into plots and reduced in size several times in the post-war period. To this day, however, the Tralau manor house is privately owned. The playful and picturesque exterior also secretly makes the manor house a castle. The surrounding gardens were created in the English style and are interspersed with bodies of water and groups of trees. This design gives Tralau Castle its romantic overall setting. The castle can also be seen from the A21 when driving past. The castle no longer seems to be accessible to the public, however, because there is a small sign on the access road: Private. No entry. What a pity! There is also a very interesting video about the castle and other castles in the area that I can recommend: www.ndr.de/fernsehen/sendungen/die_nordstory/Das-Schloss-muss-weg,sendung521662.html www.hamburg-tourism.de/sehen-erleben/sehenswuerdigkeiten/herrenhaus-tralau

In the 18th century, Tremsbüttel continued to serve as a ducal official residence, administered by Christian zu Stolberg-Stolberg from 1777 to 1800. Under the ducal bailiff, the estate experienced a cultural heyday. Around 1780, Stolberg had a new manor house built on the property, a landscaped garden laid out, and welcomed guests such as Matthias Claudius, Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock, and Wilhelm von Humboldt to the estate. Tremsbüttel Castle experienced its heyday in the 1960s and 1970s as a meeting place for Hamburg and international society. Famous names such as Leonard Bernstein, Sophia Loren, the Beatles, and the Rolling Stones, as well as Hans-Joachim Kulenkampff, Heidi Kabel, Walter Scheel, Curd Jürgens, Inge Meysel, and Rudi Carrell, were among the guests. For several years, the castle grounds also housed a car museum, primarily featuring vintage cars. It was later relocated to Hamburg and closed in 1997. I visited the museum at the time and was very impressed. www.kreis-stormarn.de/freizeit-und-tourismus/herrenhaeuser/tremsbuettel.html

The Tremsbüttel manor house, built by the entrepreneur Fritz Hasenclever in 1895, housed a hotel as early as the late 1930s. After the war, it was one of the finest addresses in northern Hamburg – and remains so today. In Tremsbüttel Castle, built in 1895, you can "meet and dine like a lord of the castle." Even world stars like the Beatles have stayed in the hotel, which the Neo-Renaissance building has been in since 1939. "Be the lord of the castle for once," the hotel advertises. Here, parties can dine like royalty. Hotel director Anne-Katrin Funcke attaches great importance to preserving the original style of the house – and to providing refined hospitality. The Hamburg pharmaceutical company Strathmann has been the owner since 1997. The elegantly furnished rooms are primarily booked for conferences, celebrations, or weddings, because anyone who wants to "be the lord of the castle for a day," as the hotel brochure advertises, is unlikely to want to enjoy it alone. But individual overnight stays, for example for travelers passing through, are also possible. The 14 suites from the "Beatles era" have been expanded to 26 rooms, and with the inclusion of a new wing, the number rises to 50. An official wedding room is available. https://www.kreis-stormarn.de/freizeit-und-tourismus/herrenhaeuser/tremsbuettel.html

The Schloss- (Hotel) Tremsbüttel with its beautiful park is a real feast for the eyes. In the castle park, however, the noise from the nearby motorway bothers a little enjoyment. The castle Tremsbüttel were built in the 19th century and is actually the mansion of a former nobleman estate. However, it is called a castle because of its castle-like building. Since the dissolution of the Gutswirtschaft it is a hotel enterprise. The park is open all year round. A beautiful castle with an equally beautiful castle garden, which is freely accessible. The Chinese-Japanese Garden, in particular, is enchanting and worth seeing. The history of the castle dates back to 1571. The Tremsbüttel Manor House, built in 1893/94, with its Neo-Renaissance style elements, is a typical architectural monument of the Wilhelminian period and historicism. Today, the "fairytale castle," located between the Hanseatic cities of Hamburg and Lübeck, serves as a conference and congress center as well as a dream location for weddings and other private celebrations. The large aristocratic estate of Tremsbüttel was sold in 1475 to the Duke of Saxe-Lauenburg, who used it as a bailiwick and hunting lodge. In 1571, it was pledged to the Dukes of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf, who, as sovereigns, converted it into an office. The farm buildings fell into disrepair over the course of the 18th century and became almost uninhabitable. In 1800, Count Christian of Stolberg relinquished his position as bailiff and sold the estate. Ownership subsequently changed hands rapidly. The administrative offices were merged with the Reinbek and Trittau offices in 1802. A new chapter in the estate's history was its takeover by the Remscheid entrepreneur Alfred Hasenclever (1859-1908) and his wife Olga, daughter of the previous owner Strack. They had the current manor house, or "castle," built in 1893/94 by the Berlin architects Hans Grisebach and Georg Dinklage. https://www.tremsbuettel.de/hotel/geschichte/
