The actual estate with a chapel is hidden behind the gatehouse. The chapel is accessible for services and devotions. Worship times can be found here: https://pfarrei-stella-maris.de/

The castle chapel was built around 1590. Between 1610 and 1614 the "Ducal Prayer Room" was built between the galleries in the north of the chapel. It too was restored, including the inlaid coffered ceiling. The work on the palace chapel alone cost around 450,000 euros. The funds come from a project decided in 1999, which is intended to highlight the importance of the Baroque as an outstanding epoch of Gottorf's heyday and will run until autumn 2008. A total of 1.5 million euros can be spent on this, 50 percent of which are EU funds. The State Office for the Preservation of Monuments assumed the cost of the prayer room of 20,000 euros.
