Very close to the lock, Henneberg Castle stands on a specially created 15-meter-high hill. It looks like a fairy tale with its battlements and two towers, in the middle of an enchanted garden with trees. It was built in 1887 by the landowners Albert and Bruno Henneberg - on a scale of 1:4 of a castle that the Count of Henneberg had built in Meiningen, Thuringia. The Hamburg branch of the Hennebergs wanted to commemorate their ancestors and create a monument for themselves. The mini-castle with its 43 square meter interior area is still a monument today: It has been a listed building since 1991. A Hamburg couple fell in love with the gem, bought it in 2013 and founded a non-profit foundation. Quite small but also beautiful

Restaurant Randel, owned by the family since 1840, is currently called "Del" and is located in a "barn" next to the castle-like building. The castle was actually operated as a restaurant.

Very nice little castle

Unfortunately the bridge is still broken and impassable. Too bad. But the history of the castle is very interesting. If you are interested in other castle ruins: Cecilieninsel, Burg Ahrensfelde, ring wall on the Elbe-Lübeck Canal or the Ertheneburg are really interesting. With all the examples, the castle itself can only be guessed at.

Henneberg Castle is a 1: 4 scale replica of Henneberg Castle in southern Thuringia. The replica is on the Alster in Hamburg-Poppenbüttel in the immediate vicinity of the Poppenbüttler lock.
