Castle of the castle Stegen consisting of main castle, outer bailey and an elevation in the northeast (referred to as "garden") wowie ramparts and ditches.
Because of their strategically favorable location in the Alster lowlands, the trade routes Hamburg - Lübeck and Hamburg - Segeberg had to be controlled from Burg Stegen.
In the 16th century, the Alster-Trave Canal connected the Elbe to the Alster, the Alster, and finally the best of the Trave. At the junction of the Alster with the old Alster stood the castle. However, this predecessor of today's Kiel Canal was used only a few years, as it always fell dry again and was not navigable.

The castle was first mentioned in writing in 1302: to increase its defense value, lord of the castle Johann von Hummersbüttel had the water dammed in the Alsterniederung. The downstream deprived water and raids on passing merchants led in 1347 to the siege of the castle. Despite the attack with heavy military equipment (including a slingshot) it could not be taken. On July 22, 1348, however, King Waldemar IV succeeded in contracting the abandonment of the castle and the withdrawal of the lord of the castle. Thereafter, the castle Stegen was destroyed, a reconstruction was not allowed.

During excavations in the hill of the main castle, one encountered strong rock foundations and individual bricks as well as wooden posts of the predecessor building. Remains of the stone tower were removed in the 19th century. The roof should have been covered with so-called monk and nun pans.

Unfortunately the bridge is still broken and impassable. Too bad.

But the history of the castle is very interesting.

If you are interested in other castle ruins: Cecilieninsel, Burg Ahrensfelde, ring wall on the Elbe-Lübeck Canal or the Ertheneburg are really interesting.
With all the examples, the castle itself can only be guessed at.

Something has happened here - the main bridge to the castle has been renewed and paths have been laid out, with further bridges (in the rear part) on the old Alster. Seating and information boards have been set up here that provide information about the former castle.

In the middle of the newly designed area there is also a goat enclosure - the goats are supposed to take care of the grass.

At the end of May 2024 there was a reopening here with a medieval camp, pottery, mock battles, archery and bard singing.
