The Sieg waterfall in Schladern was created during the construction of the railway from Cologne to Giessen in 1857 and 1858. The loops that the Sieg still makes through the idyllic landscape today posed a number of problems for the engineers. These were solved by energetic interventions in nature. They blasted away parts of a mountain and gave the river a new course. The original Sieg loop was closed down and partially filled in for the railway line.
