Although the view from the shelter isn't great (you can just make out Lake Schieder through the sparse spruce trees), there's even a summit register inside – a nice touch! And in front of the shelter is a particularly well-restored boundary stone!

The Saalberg is unwooded and has an extensive sand-lime quarry west to north-west of the summit. Its northern foothills are called the Vorderer Saalberg (319.3 m above sea level).
