Toncek Lagoon, located at an altitude of 1,700 meters on Cerro Catedral, is notable for the intense green color of its waters and its surrounding granite towers, which attract mountaineers and photographers. On its shores stands the Emilio Frey Refuge, a key point for hikers exploring Nahuel Huapi National Park. In summer, it's an ideal place to rest after a hike and enjoy the views, while in winter it often freezes over, creating a spectacular landscape.

Excellent landscapes and wonderful routes to explore, both trekking and by bike.

Today we paid €40 per person for entry. Now we can stay in the national park for three days and two nights. The campsites in the park are free.

Just a few steps from the shores of Lago Argentino, this nature reserve stretches out and is home to around 80 different species of birds. The planked paths and trails in particular invite you to explore the area at your leisure. With a little patience, you can observe flamingos, ducks, swans and many other water birds up close. What is special here is the proximity to nature: you don't have to walk far to see an amazing variety of birds in a relatively small area. The entrance fee is moderate and supports the preservation of this protected area, which protects not only birds but also impressive flora. For even better observation, you can borrow binoculars from the visitor center so that you can also get a good view of the birds further away. What I particularly liked is the peaceful atmosphere around the lake, which is enhanced by the constant chirping and the sound of the wind. A small note: Due to flooding, the circular path is currently partially closed, which makes the tour a little shorter. Nevertheless, the visit is worthwhile for anyone interested in the birdlife of Patagonia and who wants to enjoy the contrast between the mountains in the background and the extensive wetlands

The hike to Laguna Esmeralda is a true highlight for anyone wanting to experience the rugged beauty of Patagonia. The trail leads through dense forests, past rivers and marshy areas that can be quite challenging in the rain. Sturdy footwear is essential, especially in wet weather, as the muddy terrain demands both sure footing and patience. But it is precisely this variety of paths, from wooden boardwalks to small inclines, that makes the hike so diverse and exciting. The lake itself lies nestled between snow-capped peaks, its emerald-green water appearing almost unreal. I found the transition between the wintry mountain landscapes and the vibrant colors of the water particularly impressive – an almost meditative experience. The landscape here changes rapidly, constantly offering new perspectives, whether through the mist that suddenly rolls in or the view of the surrounding glaciers looming in the distance. A personal tip: If you have the time, you should also visit the nearby Laguna Turquesa – a fantastic addition to the hike that offers even more breathtaking views. However, be prepared for the typical Patagonian weather changes. What starts as clear visibility can quickly turn into fog and wind, significantly impacting the view of the lake. Despite the often challenging conditions, this hike remains one of my favorite experiences in this region, an impressive journey not only for experienced hikers but also for nature lovers. The feeling of finally seeing Laguna Esmeralda after the final climb is unforgettable and well worth every effort.

There is a sublime view of the Fitz Roy from Laguna Capri! An indescribable experience, especially when the sky is blue!

It is incredibly beautiful here at the lagoon, especially beautiful when the peaks are reflected in the lake when the sky is clear. The water is cold and the ground is rocky, but some people dare to take a swim. In any case, you can enjoy your picnic and the view here before continuing or going back.
