It is located on one of the most beautiful squares in Vienna and is one of the oldest and most interesting churches in Vienna. Until 1784 it was run as a court parish church. Today it is the parish and monastery church of the Salvatorians. In addition to St. Stephan and the Schottenkirche, St. Michael is mentioned from 1288 as one of the three city parish churches, which until the Josephinian parish reform in 1782 included the districts of Mariahilf, Fünfhaus, Sechshaus and Währing. The history of the chapel is not entirely clear: its architecture can be dated to the early 13th century. At this time, the last duke of the House of Babenberg, Frederick the Quarrelsome (1230–1246), was Lord of Vienna. The hypothesis was put forward that the Duke, who would have liked to see Vienna as a bishopric, had a crypt built for Saint Koloman, the then patron saint of the desired diocese. The church was founded in the first half of the 13th century as the second town parish church (after St. Stephen). The term Michaeler refers to the Barnabites, who worked at the church from 1626 to 1923.
