The Kyrgyz are closing the pass and building a fence. There have been too many landslides and the actual path is no longer recognizable. It's a real torture on a bike, I can't recommend it.

This section requires to mostly carry or push your bike as there has been multiple landslide and the trail is covered on slate for most of the way. Be careful when you are stepping to avoid sliding. There is no access to water in this section.

Allow me to explain. My partner and I wanted to get over this pass to ride down to Murdash, and were told it was a steep but doable pass. We wanted to include it in our Expedition Alay bikepacking route, and decided to try it. But after 4 hours of pushing up 6km, with dust filling our shoes and every pore in our body, we collapsed in our tent and decided to return downhill the next morning. Even if you're descending, this track will seriously dust you up. It's steep, dry, and if someone floods the road (which happened with us) it turns to a muddy mess that can seriously clog your bike and drivetrain. Have a look at the images before attempting this, and good luck if you do!

For those going up, you might also be able to ride this (luggage / gears dependent). If you're coming down from Jiptik, you might want to consider riding / pushing your bike over the black line northeast of this highlight. It's a hiking track that's more straightforward, but we didn't get to try it. This highlight leads you to another rock-covered track that is a big headache to navigate.

My partner and I pushed our bikes to the top and consider this track the most dangerous of the entire Jiptik climb + descend. It's extremely narrow, barely allowing you to walk next to your bike without falling over. With slippery sand and small rocks / slate and a sideways incline, falling or slipping is a high risk. Whether you're going up or down, be careful on this section!
