In the 1990s, volunteers excavated parts of the lead mine, which had been closed in 1957, for the Mining Museum in Mechernich. They removed the sludge that had washed into the mine, partially supported the tunnels with wooden structures, and opened it to visitors. During the very interesting tour, the mine guide explained the local geology, mining and processing methods during the various mining eras, and provided generally understandable information about Mechernich's mining history, particularly the Günnersdorf mine, including current examples from the site.

A little off the Eifel Loop "Where Forests Rustle," we come across this small cave in the sandstone cliff. Definitely worth seeing.

The old tunnel entrance of an iron ore mine is located on the geological mining history educational and hiking trail. A very beautiful and interesting path just behind the old mill wheel on the Reifferscheider Bach.

Caution: When wet, the stone steps of the stairs can be very slippery. A little caution and using the attached handrail won't hurt.
