On Saturday mornings Penrose becomes the site of West Cornwall's Parkrun with around 200 runners taking on the 5km course each week. The running route follows the old Victorian roadway through woodland and parkland with views of Loe Pool and beyond. It is very busy at that time.

This is a nice combination. From Loe Baar you have a view of the sea on one side and a view of a freshwater lake on the other. This allows you to walk completely around the lake.

Loe Bar was originally the mouth of the River Cober which led to a harbor at Helston. However, by the 13th century the bar had cut Helston off from the sea and formed the lake. Loe Bar consists largely of chert deposits, although it is not certain where this comes from as the nearest source is more than 200 kilometers away. There is also a reasonable amount of sand. Sitithians Lake is the largest inland water in West Cornwall and boasts a variety of watersports at an activity centre, fishing, lakeside walking and a café. The lake is a reservoir, dammed in 1967 which submerged 274 acres of farmland. This bridge was created to replace roads that were now under water.

Amazing beach which is a spit between Loe Pool and the sea. Hardly anyone here, just us and a dog walker. Find a reason to visit this place!

The Stithians Reservoir is a man-made, dammed reservoir dating back to 1962, with construction being completed in five years. The valley behind the dam was flooded, including 274 acres of land and three country houses. On a good day, taking the paths around Stithians Reservoir can often offer plenty to watch, whether that's sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, SUP and canoeing activities on the lake from the watersports centre, or plenty of bird watching and fly fishing to be enjoyed.

The views are absolutely stunning.

From the top of Carn Marth at 755 feet (230 m), there are incredible views over the rural countryside of inland Cornwall. With a rich history from mining and quarrying, this area is littered with disused mining works and quarries, like the former granite quarry here that is now flooded to form Hick's Quarry pool.

Loe Bar is a 0.5-mile (0.8 km) shingle bank which separates the Loe, the largest natural freshwater lake in Cornwall, from the sea. Loe Bar was once the mouth of the River Cober but by the 13th century it had cut Helston off from the sea (possibly due to a storm) and the pool was formed. Be warned, Loe Bar is a dangerous stretch of beach due to strong waves, a steep and slippery bank and strong currents. Rumours pervade that the deaths that have happened here are the result of freak waves. Nevertheless, it’s best to heed the advice and never swim here.
