The castle is open from March until October Sunday to Wednesday. It is closed on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays for private events.

The first castle at Berkeley was a motte-and-bailey, built around 1067 by William FitzOsbern shortly after the Conquest. This was subsequently held by three generations of the first Berkeley family, all called Roger de Berkeley, and rebuilt by them in the first half of the 12th century

A great footpath that takes you through the magnificent Newark Park Estate. Stick to the main path all the way after turning left just after the entrance lodge (Hillmill Lane end), don't veer off left again along the another vague path just a bit up the hill... that will lead you to all sorts of trouble!

A spectacular and very well maintained castle, though I hear Edward II didn't particularly enjoy his visit here!

Berkeley Castle's origins date back to the 11th century and except for a period of royal ownership by the Tudors, it has remained with the Berkeley family. It is traditionally belived that King Edward II was murder at Berkeley Castle in 1327.
