7월 1, 2025, Stair Hole Rock Arches

Stair Hole is a fascinating and impressive place on the Jurassic Coast in southern England that is definitely worth a visit. The cliffs and rocks that jut out into the sea here are breathtakingly beautiful and provide a dramatic backdrop for photographers and nature lovers. Particularly impressive is the natural rock formation that leads into the water like a staircase (hence the name) – a real highlight for any visitor. The area is perfect for coastal walks, where you can enjoy the fresh sea air and admire the impressive natural surroundings. Stair Hole is a place that combines tranquility and beauty and leaves a lasting impression. An absolute must for anyone who wants to experience the wild beauty of the English coast!

A wonderful area. Breathtaking views of the cliffs and the sea; it's worth coming here for hiking and, in the summer, definitely for swimming. I recommend staying at the nearby Durdle Door Holiday Park.

The quarry caves are closed now due to rock falls. And if you weren't aware, there is a bat cave located just off the main path as you go up the steep hill to the east, home to the Greater Horseshoe bat.

Quirky Dorset 25 – The Smugglers’ Cave – – – Exploring The Countryside and Lanes of Dorset – – – Continuing our theme of quirky things in Dorset – I think this must be Quirky Dorset Part 25 🙂 – we return to the coast, and a very hidden part of the Jurassic Coast too. And we are visiting another part of Dorset with a really adventurous past……..ah, if only rocks could talk! This is the Smugglers’ Cave. The Smugglers’ Cave The Smugglers' CaveThe Smugglers’ Cave The Smugglers’ Cave is situated in a tucked away position in Mupe Bay, or to be more exact, Bacon Hole, which is a tiny bay just west of Mupe Bay. It is rugged and remote, miles away from the nearest town or road. The only way here is on foot and that is no easy walk either, and there is no way down from the cliff top above other than to continue east to access the beach at Mupe Bay and then retrace your steps back along the rocky shore. You could easily miss this cave as it is not easily visible from the coast path and even from the waters edge, it is still not obvious. It is sited a couple of miles east of Lulworth Cove and village and it is fairly clear why this would be a good choice for smugglers to land and store their contraband ready for onward movement inland. Goods such as brandy, wine and tea would have been landed in this sheltered cove and moved swiftly into the cave under cover of darkness. The entrance to the cave slopes at a forty five degree angle because of the way the strata has been crumpled and upturned along this part of the coast. As you enter the mouth, you can spot the false back wall with its small square door in the gloom. It was behind this wall that the contraband would have been stored, protected from the elements.

Winspit is a disused quarry on the cliffs near Worth Matravers in the Isle of Purbeck, Dorset, England. To the west and east are the hills of West Man and East Man. Until around 1940 Winspit was used as a stone quarry, providing stone for buildings in London. During World War II it was used as a site for naval and air defences. After the war the caves were opened to the public. The quarry is now a lesser-known tourist attraction. Recently many of Winspit's caves have been closed off for public safety and bat conservation. In March 2022, it was announced that the National Trust had purchased the 350 acre Weston Farm, including Winspit and its bat caves, adding to its other landholdings in the village and its vicinity such as Spyway.

These caves are what is left over after the area was used to quarry Purbeck stone in the 1800s. Once open to the public, they are now closed due to safety reasons, but you can see parts of the Tilly Whim caves from afar and learn about their history at Durlston Country Park where they are situated. The now fenced off tourist entrance to the cave tunnels can be found along the cliff walk in the park, and the best view of this piece of local history is from the path up toward the Anvil Point lighthouse, where you can look back to see two square-shaped cave entrances and the flat rock ledge above the sea in front of them. Now untouched by human activity, the Tilly Whim caves have become important sanctuaries for colonies of seabirds and bats. The caves were closed to the public in 1976 due to safety reasons. The entrance is fenced off and there are warning signs around the caves. Stepped access allows you to walk down past the caves and on up toward the lighthouse on Anvil Point – keep to these to reduce the risk of slipping on any loose stones or mud and to help reduce erosion in the area. Swimming in the sea around any part of these cliffs at Durlston is not possible – there are sheer drops from a vast height, strong tides and rip currents, and no shoreline. The Tilly Whim caves have also sadly seen the death of a woman who was swimming and became caught in them in 2013.

This is one of the more than two hundred quarries that existed in the 18th century in the Worth Matravers, Langton Matravers, and Swanage area, from which materials were extracted for the construction of major buildings in London.

This spectacular view is something of a hidden gem! The location is a little remote but the view of the Purbeck and south Dorset coast is stunning, especially in good weather. The banded rock formations, chalk cliffs, bays, headlands, offshore stacks and a steeply undulating path combine to give a panorama that entices and inspires! The view looks east over Bacon Hole and the Mupe Rocks on to Mupe Bay, Bindon Hill, Rings Hill, Worbarrow Bay, Gold Down and Swyre Head. The latter is 10 km distant but 13 km away on the coast path. The rocks in the foreground straddle the Jurassic and Cretaceous geologic time boundary. This boundary occurs on the beach between the strikingly-banded Purbeck rock layers (Cretaceous) and the sea stacks of Mupe Rocks (Jurassic). Please note that the area lies within the Lulworth Army Ranges and public access is restricted to school holidays and most weekends.

Bat's Head is a chalky promontory in the south Dorset coast. At the base of the cliff is a bat's cave and from the top you get awesome views out to sea and along the coast. Durdle Door to the east is particularly good from here.

This whole area is really beautiful. There is a cafe just by Lulworth Cove for people watching while drinking cafe. Also other activities just as boat tours, kayaking are run from here. If you bring swimwear you can also have a swim by the stair hole in addition to the hiking opportunities. We loved the guide here with lots of inspiration on activities in the area as well as how to get there https://www.itsallbee.com/2016/09/lulworth-cove-walks-dorset/
