The Alsek Valley is one of those rare places where the landscape feels untouched and endless. Framed by the towering peaks of the St. Elias Range, the valley stretches toward the horizon with braided rivers, glacier-fed lakes, and wide tundra plains that glow with color in summer. Hiking here means stepping into true wilderness, where silence fills the air and every turn reveals another sweeping view. It’s a place to slow down, breathe deeply, and feel the vastness of the Yukon all around you. The trail that winds through the valley extends for about 25 km one way, so you can hike as far as you like, just make sure to plan according to daylight and conditions. If you plan to camp overnight, a backcountry permit from Kluane National Park is required.

You could spend hours strolling along the shore of this large, beautiful lake, with new views opening up time and time again. Unfortunately, the adjacent trails were closed due to bears.

A wonderful trail through stunning scenery with views of the mountains and, at the end, Haines Junction. Bear territory!

This hike is not to be missed. It takes you just above the tree line and with a bit of luck you can see Dall sheep.

The trailhead of the Auriol Trail is just off the Haines Highway, 7 km south of Haines Junction. The well-trodden path leads through a mixed boreal coniferous forest (cold-temperate forest) with a slight incline. Further up, the circular hike goes through wetlands with small lakes to the sub-alpine zone, where you have a wonderful view of the mountains of the 'Auriol Range', especially the peaks of 'Mount Martha Black'. The trail is marked - with kilometer information. In spring you have to reckon with deep snow conditions on the path when descending on the west side. https://parks.canada.ca/pn-np/yt/kluane/activ/randonnee-hiking/auriol

The Spruce Beetle Trail trailhead is just off the Alaska Highway, 11 miles northwest of Haines Junction. The trail is an educational trail about the life cycle of the Spruce Beetle (bark beetle on spruce trees in Canada) and its impact on Yukon forests. https://parks.canada.ca/pn-np/yt/kluane/activ/randonnee-hiking/dendoctrone-epinette-spruce-beetle

The 'Thechàl Dhâl Visitor Center' is located on the Alaska Highway / Kluane Lake about 1 hour north of Haines Junction. Thechàl Dhâl Visitor Center is open from May 19th to September 4th from 10am to 4pm. From the center's outdoor deck, fixed binoculars can be used in spring and autumn to see Dall sheep on the south-east slope of nearby Thechàl Dhâl' Mountain. https://parks.canada.ca/pn-np/yt/kluane/visit/services/info
