Sundsvall is also called "Stone city". The town has been destroyed by fire four times. After the fire in 1888 the town was completely rebuilt in stone.

Sundsvall, on Sweden's northeast coast, has an illustrious past as one of Sweden's most important industrial cities. The impressive stone town (Stenstan) is one of the best-preserved cityscapes from the late 19th century. The 51-block historic center with its imposing and decorative brick buildings takes you back to a time when lumber and banking magnates ruled Sundsvall.
