The functions of Lake Altmühl in Bavaria are diverse: It serves to regulate water management, as a temporary reservoir for the Danube-Main system, to raise the Altmühl's low water levels, and for flood protection. At the same time, it is an important destination for tourism and recreation, offering activities such as sailing, swimming, and cycling, as well as an important sanctuary for waterfowl, particularly the "Bird Island" in the north of the lake. The cycle path around the lake is largely separated from pedestrians. Almost 100% paved. There are three lake centers with numerous restaurants.

An information board here points to the possible location of a former Roman tower for border security. Apart from the good view, there are no other traces of this today.

There is not much left to see of the former Roman border line, apart from small stone foundations, but information boards offer some interesting facts about the past.
