Lovely view of the lake, especially at sunset.

Amazing place. I was able to check out the shop and cafe, and have a peak at the garden, whetting my appetite to make it a day's destination some time.

This exceptionally grand estate sits atop the source of the River Stour and is part-owned by the National Trust. Built in the 1700s, the Grade I-listed mansion is just a small section of this sprawling estate. The village of Stourton is part of the Stourhead estate and includes a beautiful church, a pub and surrounding farmland. The gardens are perhaps the biggest draw and walking around the (artificially created) lakes is a lovely experience throughout the year. Designed to give the impression of a journey through parts of Greek mythology, you’ll find a Palladian bridge, a Pantheon and a Temple of Apollo. There’s no bad time of year to visit Stourhead and different plants and trees come into their own in different seasons. If you visit in spring, the snowdrops are outstanding.

Fonthill Lake is a tranquil stretch of water nestling in the picturesque Fonthill Estate. You can hike right along the west banks of the lake and watch impressive displays of birdlife at all times of year. The lake was used as the location for the river scenes in the movie Chocolat, which starred Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp.

What a gorgeous area. A lovely descent down through stourton, the National Trust house, pub and houses and gardens. Under a grotto style bridge and views ahoy!

Built in from 1721 - 24, Stourhead is a wonderful estate at the source of the River Stour. The Stourton family owned the estate for 500 years until they sold it to the Hoare family, who demolished and built a new house. Today you can visit the wonderful lake and house, which is part-owned by the National Trust. The gardens are particularly stunning in autumn, when the trees hugging the river turn crimson and gold. Amazing trails surrounding the lake, perfect on a gravel or cyclocross bike.

Super nice traffic free trail around the back of the lake. There is also a little cafe on the other side where you can grab a cold/ hot drink and hang out by the lake.
