Akaroa is a small coastal town with French charm on the Banks Peninsula in the Canterbury region of New Zealand's South Island. As the only French settlement in New Zealand and one of the first European settlements in the country, Akaroa enchants with its beautiful harbor, the Akaroa Harbor, and its colonial architecture. In 1838, French whaling ship captain Jean François L'Anglois decided that Akaroa was the ideal location for a town to serve as a base camp for the whaling ships. He purchased the Banks Peninsula from the native Maori in a shady deal. He then returned to France and assembled a group of French and German families who sailed to New Zealand to form a French colony there. On August 18, 1840, 63 settlers reached the Banks Peninsula and founded Akaroa. Today there are references to the French origins and history everywhere Location: Pretty streets with French names are lined with historic houses decorated with roses.
