The line between Erlangen-Eltersdorf and Bamberg is laid out (or approved) for four-track directional operation, so that fast long-distance and regional trains (up to 230 km/h) generally run on the outside of the line in each direction, while slower S-Bahn and freight trains (up to 160 km/h) run on the inside. North of the station, there is a central turning track for the S-Bahn. From the station to the southern junction after crossing the Truppach River, there is a fifth track to the east, leading towards Ebermannstadt. Forchheim (Upper Franconia) station has eight tracks, five of which have platforms (one main platform and two island platforms). The following operating concept is generally implemented: Regional express services from Bamberg to Nuremberg stop at the main platform, track 1 (usable length: 210 m, covered, height: 76 cm). S-Bahn trains stop at one of the central platforms (140 m long, of which 65 m are covered, 76 cm high) with tracks 4 and 5, some of which terminate there. On the other central platform (20 m covered), regional express trains from Nuremberg to Bamberg stop at track 7 (210 m long, 76 cm high), and regional trains to and from Ebermannstadt stop at track 8 (100 m long, 55 cm high). The other three tracks without platforms serve high-speed and freight traffic.[6] All platforms are barrier-free and equipped with dynamic passenger information. The track system is enclosed with soundproof walls. The unique city colors (red and yellow) with the coat of arms, which were adopted by the city council, are striking. In addition to the eight tracks, there are two sidings to the east for the vehicles of the Wiesenttalbahn. Since then, various construction phases have occurred in connection with the ongoing expansion of the northern station area and the adjacent northern section of the line. In the 2024 annual timetable, the western two of four through main tracks at the northern end of the station are in operation, while the two eastern tracks are being rebuilt. Northbound trains will be transferred at 60 km/h to the second track from the west, which will be used by southbound S-Bahn trains in regular service in the future.
