Although most tourists come to Húsavik on Skjálfanda Bay for the popular whale-watching tours, a visit to the wooden church, built in 1907, is still a must. The oldest piece in the church is the chandelier, dating from 1640. Other items, such as the altarpiece from 1931, are more recent.

Húsavík is a small town in Norðurþing municipality in northern Iceland on the coast of Skjálfandi Bay. The residents' income comes from tourism and fishing, as well as retail and small industry. Húsavík has become a center of whale watching in the north as whales of various species frequently invade the bay. The Húsavík Whale Museum is located in the city. It is also home to the Icelandic Phallological Museum, which contains specimens of all the mammals living in Iceland, and the Húsavík Whale Museum. Viking Garðar Svavarsson was the first confirmed human to spend a winter on the island. He gave the island the name Garðarshólmi. A memorial near the school house commemorates him. The name "Húsavík" means "(small) bay of houses" and probably refers to the homestead of the Swedish Viking Garðar Svavarsson, who spent a winter in the bay around 870 AD. The Mývatn region with its interesting geology and diverse wildlife is nearby. Húsavík used to export silica extracted from the lake.

Húsavík Church has been a symbol of Húsavík since its inauguration in 1907, considered by many Icelanders to be the most beautiful wooden church in the country. It was built in the shape of a cross with wood imported from Norway.
