The Alpine Rose Trail is an easy high-altitude trail between Füssen and Hohenschwangau, offering beautiful views of numerous sights and scenic highlights in the area. It was created around 1850 by King Maximilian II for his wife Marie and is a section of the Ostallgäu High Trail. Hardly any of the alpine roses remain today, but a hike along the Alpine Rose Trail offers magnificent views of the landscape and sights of the area. The most beautiful views awaiting you on the Alpine Rose Trail are those overlooking Lake Schwansee and its adjacent park. In 1837 and 1838, King Maximilian II had the areas surrounding Lake Schwansee redesigned in the style of a typical English landscape garden, creating Hohenschwangau Palace Park. The highlight of the hike along the Alpine Rose Trail is the Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles, located very close to Lake Alpsee, amidst a picturesque mountain landscape. For centuries, the Benedictine abbey was an important religious, cultural, and economic center of the region—from the mid-9th century until its secularization in 1802. High above the picturesque banks of the Lech River rises the magnificent Baroque monastery complex, built at the beginning of the 18th century under the direction of the renowned architect Johann Jakob Herkomer.
