Oviedo's Cathedral dates back to the 13th century and has been expanded over the centuries, offering a wide mix of architectural styles beautifully integrated into one impressive building. Also preserved and admired in the Cámara Santa is the Asturian Victory Cross, which according to legend was made in the 8th century after the first victory of the Spaniards against the Moors in Covadonga and contains at its core a wooden cross that King Pelayo presented to the Virgin Mary in of the Holy Cave - but the cross is probably two centuries older. It is worth knowing for pilgrims on the Way of St. James that the Cathedral of Oviedo is the starting point of the Camino Primitivo - the most original of all routes to Santiago de Compostela, which only a few pilgrims have walked, on which King Alfonso II founded the pilgrimage to St. James.
