A little ford with a tiny waterfall, but still a delightful little spot. Fortunately the ground on the other side was frozen as the cows had churned it up into a real mudbath.

Although there is not much left of the castle, this is an atmospheric place that is well worth the detour from the trail. It also looks like many of the stones from the castle were borrowed to build the nearby farm!

Choice of two absolutely brutal climbs from the Wye valley to get here but rewarded with fantastic views across the Golden Valley towards the Black Mountains. If that felt like hard work, think of the people who moved the 25 ton capstone up here!

Taking the footpath to the left (no cycling!) and walking for a few minutes you will reach the summit of Merbach Hill at a height of 318m. From the summit you can take in a vista of views. To the South East the meandering journey of the Wye can be followed with the Malvern's in the background. To the west the imposing Welsh Black Mountains fill the landscape, with Hay Bluff taking centre stage.

10월 18, 2022, Snodhill Castle Ruins
Snodhill castle is a rare pre-Norman castle built around 1050. It is likely this was to guard the fertile Dore Valley and the thriving Saxon villages in the surrounding lands. The castle was built by Norman Superknight William Fitz Osbern, 1st Earl of Hereford during a campaign with an objective to assert Norman control along the Welsh Marches. Snodhill Castles position, strength and size would have meant it was heavily involved in many political disputes and wars along the Welsh Marches.

The view from Arthur's stone is beautiful! The climb is steepest at the bottom (hitting 25% for longer than anyone needs...) but does ease up to allow for a bit of leg spinning/recovery/regaining your breath!

2월 4, 2021, Merbach Hill Summit
Merbach Hill, at 1,043 feet (318 m), is a glorious place to survey Herefordshire’s landscape of patchwork farmland and rolling hills. This is an easy hill walk that rewards with superb views. In the distant east rise the Malverns, whilst the River Wye's wildly meandering course is seen beautifully. Wales' Black Mountains are the panorama's most dramatic aspect, particularly the prominent Hay Bluff.

Arthur's Stone is the oldest human made structure in Herefordshire. Dating back to sometime between 3700 and 2700 BC, it is the remains of a Neolithic chamber tomb. It is located in a wonderfully picturesque spot, on a high ridgeline above the rolling pastures of the Golden Valley.

2월 4, 2021, Arthur's Stone and Dorstone Church
Dorstone may well be one of the most ancient settlements in Herefordshire. To the north of the village is Arthur's Stone, a chamber tomb originating from between 3700 and 2700 BC, making it Herefordshire's oldest human structure. The village is the site of a former motte-and-bailey castle, now all but gone. It is an excellent area for hillwalking, with various trails that explore the Golden Valley's rolling countryside. The Pandy Inn is a walker-friendly pub that serves great food and offers accommodation.
