A spectacular place which sums up everything you might imagine about an English castle. It was built in the 12th century and was where Mary Tudor was proclaimed the Queen of England. It is in the care of English Heritage and you can wonder at the amazing views from the outside for free or pay to go inside. The detached round tower of Bramfield St Andrew’s, built about 18 feet south-west of the Church, is unusual. It has very thick walls, possibly for stability as it has no nave to give support. It was probably built in the early 14th century, about the same time as the nave and chancel. It now has 15th century Tudor brick belfry openings and later brick repairs and battlements. You can’t go into or around the castle with road bikes but you can go as far as the entrance with its impressive walls.

Nothing too special but the location is convenient and there’s a handy outdoor table area.

Part of a great cycle path that takes you from the main Halesworth to Bramfield road right into the heart of Halesworth. Depending on the time of year some sections my have livestock on them so just be aware
