Tunstall Forest is a managed woodland with a mixture of coniferous plantations, broadleaved belts and heathland. It's managed by Forestry England.

The tree itself is on private land in a small paddock. You can safely ride to the gates also used in the series and view the tree from there. I was lucky enough to meet someone working on the parkland who was happy for me to nip in and grab a quick snap.

The ride in is along quite a rough track so don't do it on inappropriate tyres.

This is the 'Lunch Tree' from the popular TV series 'The Detectorists'. The favourite resting spot of characters Andy (Mackenzie Crook) and Lance (Toby Jones) fellow detectorists. The series is set in the fictional small town of Danebury in north Essex but all the filming was done here in Suffolk.

Don't get lost its really easy to get turned around. Make sure you have the appropriate tyres too some of the trails are made up with flint

Boasting broadleaved belts, coniferous plantations and regions of heathland that connect Tunstall and Blaxhall Common, Tunstall Forest is a lovely place to explore. The Sandlings Walk long-distance trail passes through the forest, featuring the nightjar on its waymarkers. The forest is a particularly good place to spot this emblematic, ground nesting species.

Wantisden Park offers some gloriously characterful glamping options for those exploring the Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB. Overlooking ancient woodland, it's a beautiful setting. There are also camping facilities for those looking to spend a little less.

There is lots of tracks leading through the forest, some made for vehicle access and some overgrown tracks you can just about walk along. keep your bearings though as they are made like....

Keep that grit out of your of your gearing or you'll regret it.

Allow extra time

We tackled these lanes on 40mm tires on gravel bikes and it was really tough, almost unrideable. It's very very fine sand and you tend to sink in, lose traction unless you can really hold your speed. Probably ok on a really fat MTB tire or if it's been super dry and you can pick a line along the compact section. All in all, best just nipping down to Burley then taking the "quiet lane" around this section.
