If walking the route I've suggested I would wear good waterproof boots and if your unsteady on your feet take poles to help balance great walk to suit all abilities

There is a couple of these money stumps alot this route I had never seen them before until today

Re hast and des Rives Barle there are nice little places for picnic

This side of the river is just as beautiful as the other, but a little flatter. Sometimes you have to fight your way through some bushes or over tree trunks, but everything is doable. Very varied

Moderate trail for everyone to explore and enjoy

Whether you are an experienced walker or someone who prefers a short stroll, Tarr Steps is a great place to go when looking to explore Exmoor National Park. You can head straight there, utilising the on site car park and toilet facilities, with just a gentle walk down to the ancient clapper bridge. The beautiful wooded valley of the River Barle is also worth exploring for its wildlife, as is the heathland of Winsford Hill and its wild ponies in the surrounding countryside. For a short circular walk from the bridge just follow the orange way marks.

Not the prettiest Exmoor village, but probably the one with the greatest view.

Quite a strange custom. A story I was once told: if you want to get rid of an illness, you symbolically give it to a dead tree with a coin. It doesn't matter to the tree (it's already dead) But if someone else pulls out a coin and pockets it, the tree will pass this disease back to the "puller." Nasty, right? 🤷

The well-marked loop trail along the river is varied but not too demanding and is 1.75 miles long (from Tarr Steps). Small children are better off in the back carrier, older ones will have a lot of fun!

The nice place to stop for a break right at the Tarr Steps! Super cozy inn that serves lunch and dinner, and cream tea in the afternoon. Reservations are recommended, but we have always been so lucky. In summer you can also sit outside with a view of the stones.

Tarr Steps is the longest clapper bridge in all of Britain. Although the first recorded mention of this bridge dates back to the Tudor times, it may be much older. Due to river sedimentation over the years, when the river level rises significantly, it can sometimes flow over the stones.

Wheddon Cross is the highest village in Exmoor National Park and affords breathtaking views of Dunkery Beacon, Exmoor’s highest point, and over the stunning Somerset countryside. There is a lively local pub and two shops (a post office and petrol station) here, making it a good place for a pit-stop. You find accommodation in the village too.

Fantastic and friendly rural pub that serves some of the very best cream teas (remember, cream first)! A well placed sanctuary for refuelling in the middle of tough Exmoor days on the bike.
