Burnhope Reservoir is a popular spot for hikers and dog walkers. It's a nice scenic spot with a variety of walks on either side of the reservoir, and there are parking spots at both ends of the dam. There are lovely rest spots with benches on the north side; I don't know regarding the southern side.

Cow Green Reservoir is a three-kilometre long reservoir set in the heart of the North Pennines. It is set in a beautiful, wide valley under the shadow of Meldon Fell. There is a large car park with porta loos nearby that provides the only parking in the area for the myriad of outdoor activities, including hiking, in the area. Cauldron Snout, a famous waterfall, is also nearby, located on the other side of the dam.

Of the three reservoirs in this area, this one is the smallest. Additionally, it channels its waters to the Smiddy Shaw Reservoir through a small connecting canal. It is a very pleasant place for a hike, offering the opportunity to connect with some of the other reservoirs.

If you fancy a peaceful run in the area, you should definitely consider doing it around this beautiful spot. Besides the joy of running near the water, it's an ideal way to discover this rural gem and the landscapes that surround it.

Cow Green reservoir is 3km long and was completed in 1971 to supply water to Teesside. It controls the flow in the river Tees keeping the supply to industry downstream safe during dry periods. The area surrounding the reservoir is an important habitat for rare alpine plants.

This reservoir is an ideal spot if you want to enjoy a pleasant run and step on different terrains, as you can easily go around the reservoir. From this dam, you can observe it in all its splendor from one of its ends. It's important to note that entering the water for unauthorized swimming or just for a quick cool down is not allowed.

The moorland where you are has a rich history of lead mining, and right in front, you can observe what used to be the chimney of the Jeffrey Smelt Mill. Next to it (as you can see, the upper part is missing, although the rest is well-preserved), there is a dam that was also used for the mines. There was another one as well, but this is the only one that still has water in it.

Hurworth Burn Reservoir is a 21 acre lake built in 1867. It's surrounded by woodland and attracts a rich variety of wildlife.

If you’re planning on walking the reservoir loop be aware that half of it is along a quiet road

Nice 3km walk around the reservoir on the lakeside path. It's not far but the path on the east side is quite narrow and rough so fun and adventurous but not so good for buggies & wheelchairs.

Low Barns Nature Reserve is a SSSI area of mixed wetland, lake, woodland and wet woodland set around three lakes. It was originally farmland but then used for gravel and sand extraction until the 1960's. It was given to the Durham Wildlife Trust who now manage the area. The site is flat with well-maintained paths and boardwalks so it's suitable for everyone. There are several bird hides and a visitor centre with a cafe and toilets. Look out for Bitten, Kingfisher, Otter, Stoat and many other species.
