Stuart Wilcock

9월 21, 2025, Cauldron Snout Waterfall

The waterfall is fed by the Cow Green Reservoir, with water running over a dam wall and then plunging into the river.

The waterfall is called Sour Milk Ghyll. Yesterday it was the fullest I have ever seen it. Fabulous. But also the side streams on the walk were remarkably wild and high, and I had to wade through one thigh deep because stepping from stone to stone when there was a lot of water flowing over them was too risky at my age. I think the "Fix the Fells" people are building a bridge though, and the slabs through the boggy parts are making it much easier.

Stickle Ghyll is one of the most popular locations for Ghyll Scrambling/Gorge Walking in the Lake District. There is over 2 kilometres to explore, with pools to wade through, waterfalls to climb and a number of deep pools - one of which is deep enough to jump into. (Lakes Outdoors Experience)

it more of a long cataract than a waterfall and at 200 yaeds long ,reckoned to be the longest waterfall in England . keep away from the edges cos can be very slippery when wet .

Banishead Quarry is a rarely publicised beauty spot in the Lake District that is hidden away on the eastern flanks of the Old Man of Coniston. It is a super beautiful location and even has its own waterfall and an 80 foot (24 m) at that. It is a very popular wild swimming spot in the summer months. The waterfall was apparently born out of mischief when three local boys had a flash of inspiration to play ‘Let's divert the river with rocks’ back in the 1950’s. Their efforts obviously worked! If you do stop here, be aware of the dangers of wild swimming and jumping from high ledges at an unknown location.

Bannishead Quarry and tarn is a real hidden gem. You don’t see it until you are right next to it and most of the tourists heading up Coniston Old Man don’t come this way so you are likely to have it to yourself. A beautiful quarry lake made more spectacular by the waterfall.

Cauldron Snout is a stunning series of waterfalls accessible from the Pennine Way, and the large car park at Cow Green Reservoir. There is a rocky footpath that is a bit of a scramble leading down to it from Cow Green Dam; the latter makes a super nice backdrop to the first waterfall. This footpath is treacherous when wet, and you need to be very careful, a fall could have serious consequences.

Cauldron Snout is a rocky ravine below Cow Green Reservoir that the infant River Tees descends through spectacularly. The falls, which nestle within the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), are caused by the upper Tees passing over dolerite steps of the Whin Sill.

An impressive climb to the waterfall, the roar of the water and the view into the depths quickly humble you. Pay close attention to the steps, smaller climbing units are necessary. Keep well to the right of the rock and if the rock is not immediately visible, use trekking poles to test whether the ground holds, otherwise you won't be able to enjoy the view from above.
