Tobacco monument in the form of the two legendary "cigar barons" The monument with the two cigar smokers commemorates the two Bünde natives, August Steinmeister and Tönnies Wellensiek, who brought cigar production to the city between 1842 and 1843. They provided jobs and prosperity to Bünde for generations. After a boom around 1900 and a decline in the 1960s, there are still three cigar factories in Bünde today – and traditional businesses like that of the fifth-generation pipe maker Pollner, just a stone's throw away. As recently as 1935, more than 10,000 people worked in 258 cigar factories in Bünde.
