In the heart of Riva del Garda's historic old town, on Piazza Cavour, stands the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta. It faces east. Although the church may appear rather unassuming at first glance, it is considered one of the most beautiful Baroque churches in the Lake Garda region. Upon entering and admiring its magnificent interior, one will surely agree. The church's name refers to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The Romanesque parish church built on this site was first documented in 1106. Over the centuries, the church was repeatedly enlarged. At the beginning of the 18th century, the decision was made to completely rebuild the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. The architect Cipriano Tacchi redesigned the church entirely in the Baroque style. Only a Romanesque chapel was incorporated into the new architecture. The new building was consecrated in 1747. The church suffered severe damage during both World War I and a major earthquake in 1976. However, it was rebuilt and restored each time. The interior of Santa Maria Assunta consists of only one nave and eight side chapels. The high barrel vault and the numerous Baroque altars with their exquisite stucco work are particularly impressive. The centerpiece of the main altar is a painting of the Assumption of Mary by the Baroque master Giuseppe Craffonara. The same painter also created the image of Our Lady of Sorrows in one of the side chapels.

Porta San Marco is a tower nestled among the townhouses in Riva del Garda; the water fountain at the entrance is a welcome relief for many in these temperatures.
