The Schönholzer Heide is a largely natural, hilly woodland park covering 35 hectares. Other komoot users have already written about its history. There are several sports facilities here. Visitors should also see the memorials (Soviet War Memorial, the memorial grove for victims of war and tyranny). The reactivation of the historic Heidekrautbahn main line will provide rail access to another northern residential area. At the same time, recreational travelers will be able to quickly reach popular destinations such as Wandlitzsee and the Schorfheide. As part of the i2030 infrastructure program, eight new stations are to be built along the approximately 14-kilometer-long route. The starting point is Wilhelmsruh station, where the building permit, known in technical jargon as the "planning approval decision," has already been obtained. A new platform for the Heidekrautbahn will be built on a railway embankment next to the S-Bahn station. The previous station was located in a similar location, but at street level. The visualizations show what the new Wilhelmsruh station will look like in the future. Work began in November 2024 and is expected to continue until the end of 2025. A large portion of the Heidekrautbahn main line is still occasionally used for shunting operations to the Stadler company premises. However, to accommodate passenger train service, initially at 60-minute intervals, and later at 30-minute intervals, the infrastructure must be comprehensively upgraded. To accommodate the significantly increased number of trains on the line, crossing tracks will be re-established or newly installed at Berlin-Rosenthal station, Schildow station, and the Mühlenbecker See depot. At these points, oncoming trains can pass each other. In order to increase the speed from the current maximum of 25 km/h for shunting operations to up to 80 km/h for hydrogen railcars, the superstructure must first be upgraded. In addition, the 17 level crossings – where rail and road traffic intersect – must be technically secured. Noise protection measures for the immediate residents will also be implemented as part of the reactivation.
