Wonderful cafe with great food. High above the gorge, it has glass floor panels where you can see the river beneath. Well worth a stop.

The village is located in Upper Nidderdale, North Yorkshire. It is a quiet place that is surrounded by beautiful countryside.

Good views all round .nice place to stop

Great Whernside is a cracking peak to do. The walk up from the picturesque village of Kettlewell is scenic and not that long a journey, about four and a half kilometres each way. Don't expect a jagged peak of any kind, this is a nice rolling hill, topped with the obligatory good old-fashioned trig point. At 704 metres, it is easily a UK-designated Nuttall.

The village of Lodge on the edge of the valley had originally been established around a grange farm as part of the Cistercian Byland Abbey in medieval times. Occupied until the 1920's there are plaques against the ruined buildings and a small map on a display board showing you the locations of them. remains of the five buildings can still be seen and the ruined houses, with their stone flagged floors and old kitchen ranges they would have a bleak and simple lifestyle.

There is a small shelter on the West side of the Dam along the access wall which has seats inside ideal for a picnic out of the wind and rain! (Although the birds also agree)

The reservoir was built to supply water to the Bradford area of West Yorkshire. It was built by Bradford Corporation between 1904 and 1919, under an Act of Parliament in 1890 which also authorised the corporation to construct three other reservoirs in upper Nidderdale.

Recreation: Apart from its primary function of water supply, Scar House Reservoir and its surrounding area also offer recreational opportunities. The reservoir is situated in a scenic landscape, making it a popular destination for walkers and nature enthusiasts. One of the best mountains in the Dales and so much quieter than the big 3 (Y3P).

Great to spectate after heavy rainfall in the area

A gorgeous and stunning hill, at 704m (don't confuse it with Whernside, which is in a completely different location 27km away!). The name Whernside (from Querneside in Old English), first recorded in 1214, means "hillside where millstones are found". The word "Great" was added in the 18th century to distinguish it from Little Whernside. Fantastic views from the summit and the rocks and the trig point offer a nice place to lean against.

Completed in 1936 Scar House Reservoir was built to supply water to the Bradford area. It was built after Angram reservoir which is directly upstream and after Gouthwaite reservoir located a few miles downstream. The dam is 55m high in the middle.

Angram reservoir was begun in 1904 but due to the outbreak of WW1 it took until 1917 to complete it. It's made using concrete pillars and huge stone block dressed in stone cladding. Look out for Curlews, Redshank and Meadow Pippets which all nest in this area.

Great fun to walk the gorge, there are a number of other activities on offer including abseiling and via ferrata which are also highly recommended!

Great campsite with good facilities and friendly service. The gorge is definitely worth checking out with plenty of different outdoorsy activities to try.

How Stean Gorge is one of Nidderdale’s natural wonders. This spectacular limestone ravine, carved out by thousands of years of waterflow, is up to 30 feet (nine metres) deep in places and has caves, narrow paths, and dizzying bridges to explore. There is also a café, outdoor activity centre, and campsite.
