Best place to start you visit to the Lake District if you are into hiking, climbing or cycling. Beware that phone signal is always spotty in this valley. If you are using electronic navigation, make sure you have downloaded the maps before you set of. And if you are meeting friends, make sure you agree on the location and time ahead of time as you may not be able to update with mobile phone. Also, take plenty of coins for car-park as you may not be able to pay online due to the lack of signal.

I've always loved Stickle Barn. But since it re-opened as Lanty Slee's Langdale, I could not but stop there. It may open slightly too late for a coffee before tackling the Langdale Pikes but perfect for finishing your day. Delicious cakes if you are after a simple hot-drink and sweet treat, great ales if you are looking for something stronger. They often have live-music on, in particular Fridays and Saturdays during the summer months. Make sure you are booked into the campsite as the perfect combo to spend a week-end in the Langdales.

The hotel has 6 acres of mature garden with outstanding views on the fells. And from where you can enjoy a drink on the outside tables or deck-chairs in summer. The restaurant serves locally sourced produce. There is a really good value prix-fix menu Monday through Thursday serving pub-classic and more gastro-pub type food. The a la carte menu offers mostly pub classics and of course, roast dinners on Sunday. It has its own ale (Walker's mirage)
