One of Denmark's largest restoration projects In 2010, the Aage V. Jensen Nature Foundation acquired the area. Their goal was to restore the original Filsø lake and create a unique natural area. The restoration of the area, which now covers approximately 2,308 hectares, has been successful; since 2011, well over 200 different bird species have been recorded at the 915-hectare lake, which has once again become an important bird resting place. Among the many species seen at Filsø are terns, cranes, herons, snowy storks, and even white-tailed eagles. Furthermore, with over 50 different species, the lake is the most diverse in Denmark for aquatic plants. Filsø also has another exciting history, as it played an important role for the Vikings during the Viking Age. At that time, the lake was an open fjord directly connected to the North Sea.
