10월 27, 2025, World War II Memorial Bell Tower
Bell Tower at Skamlingsbanken In the valley below Højskamling, you’ll find a simple but powerful monument: the open bell tower, built in 1948 to honour South Jutland’s resistance fighters from World War II. The tower features bronze plates engraved with the names of 83 fallen heroes from the region. Three times a day during summer, the bell plays Prins Jørgen's March—a melody that was used by the BBC as a signal to Denmark during the war. The idea to build the tower came during a large celebration of Denmark’s liberation in June 1945, attended by around 100,000 people. The bell tower stands as a reminder of both Denmark’s fight for freedom and the long history of cultural resistance in the region, making it a meaningful stop on your hike. With its 113 meters above sea level, Skamlingsbanken has a beautiful view, Skamlingsbanken is the highest point in South and Southern Jutland. Skamlingsbanken is a beautiful nature area, from which there is a magnificent view of the entire area between Kolding and Christiansfeld. There is also a view over the Little Belt to Funen and to the west far into Southern Jutland. The landscape appears lush with fields, beech forests, hedges along roads and field boundaries. In the area there are plenty of opportunities for walks that go through the beautiful landscape - take for example the trip all the way down to Binderup and Grønninghoved Strand and back again. Skamlingsbanken is especially known for the folk festivals that were held in the years 1843-59 in support of the Danish cause in Southern Jutland. At Højskamlingen there is a 16 meter high support made of 25 granite blocks in memory of the defenders of the Danish cause in Schleswig. The support was erected in 1863, blown up by the Prussians in 1864 and erected again in 1866. The rebuilding was possible because people in the area had collected and stored the stones. In the vicinity of the support are six other memorial supports and a lectern of large boulders. Around the rostrum are five groups of trees that symbolize the inseparability of the five Nordic countries. The trees are: Beech (Denmark), birch (Sweden), spruce (Norway), one (Finland) and rowan (Iceland). After the liberation in 1945, a memorial grove was set up for the fallen from the South Jutland resistance movement. https://www.visitkolding.dk/kolding/planlaeg-din-tur/skamlingsbanken-smuk-unik-natur-i-kolding-gdk650666

At 113 meters, Skamlingsbanken is the highest point in South Jutland. From there you have a great view of a natural landscape consisting of beech forests, slightly hilly fields along fields and paths. Five groups of trees represented the cooperation between the five Nordic countries: beech (Denmark), birch (Sweden), fir (Norway), juniper (Finland) and mountain ash (Iceland). Skamlingsbanken was formed during the last ice age when a glacier cut through Lillebælt (the Little Belt), pushing a mighty wall of stones, pebbles and loamy sand in front of it. On the Skamling he left hills and ravines. https://www.opdagdanmark.dk/de/oplevelser/skamlingsbanken/

The 16 meter high obelisk was designed built by Prof. Meldahl from 25 Swedish granite blocks. Because of the Inaugural season did not take place, and the war of 1864 began soon after. The area around Skamling was occupied, and on March 21. blew up Prussian soldiers the granite column. The stones were the confiscated and released for auction. The Skamlingsbanken company sent two Danish like-minded men from the area to auction to auction the stones. The stones were removed and later the Skamlingsbanken company transfer. Today Skamlingsbanken is primarily a scenic excursion destination with a wonderful view of the Little Belt and the surrounding area. The area was created during the last ice age - when a glacier penetrated the Little Belt from the southeast and a powerful force of stone, gravel and clay pressed in front of it. It stopped in Skamling and left the characteristic moraine landscape with steep hills and gorges. Over time, the slopes have been used for grazing and harvesting and offer typical overgrazing plants such as low thistles, thorn leaves and bud herbs. In the pavilion in the parking lot, both the cultural and natural history of Skamling is thoroughly examined. The Skamlingsbanken are no longer used for large crowds, but attract tens of thousands at the annual opera party in August. In addition, the restaurant is the traditional party and meeting point of the region and a popular tourist destination.

Skamlingsbanken is not just a nice viewpoint. It also tells important features of Danish history, especially about the South Jutland case in Schleswig in the 19th century. The place has been a popular and national meeting place since 1843. Schleswig and Südholstein used to be dukes. Schleswig under the Danish crown, Holsten with German affiliation. The border with the kingdom passed the Kongeå, and Skamling was thus in North Schleswig / South Jutland. Holsten gradually became dominant and the Danish language was crowded. The administrative language was German in both duchies, but many Southern Jews remained in the Danish language.
