On April 21, 1945, the battle for the Delfzijl Pocket began with a Canadian attack on the village of Wagenborgen, south of Delfzijl. The liberation of this region was fierce. In the early morning of April 21, the Canadians became hopelessly stuck on the Stolderijweg (road from Siddeburen to Wagenborgen). German resistance proved stronger than expected. A group of Canadians was even cut off and surrendered to the Germans. Another tragedy unfolded at the Stolderij farm. Geert Smit's farm, where the wounded were being cared for, was set ablaze by German artillery fire from Delfzijl. Only one wounded soldier and a Belgian soldier escaped the conflagration. Nineteen Canadians were killed in this attack, three officers, including the company commander. There were also civilian casualties and enormous material damage. After two days of fighting involving tanks, carriers, and mortars, Wagenborgen was liberated on April 24, 1945. The Canadians suffered a total of 27 dead and many wounded. The Dutch Reformed Church in Wagenborgen also joined the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands in 1892 and has since been called 'The Reformed Church in Wagenborgen'.

The Petruskerk (St. Peter's Church) is a church building in the Dutch town of Wagenborgen (municipality of Eemsdelta). The church dates from 1883 and is part of the Protestant Church in the Netherlands.
