The area of De Onlanden is located in the north of Drenthe, near the city of Groningen, and is approximately 2500 hectares in size. The name, chosen in 2009, is due to the combination of large-scale nature development and large-scale water storage, which means that part of the area is again "on land".

The park was donated to the inhabitants of Groningen in 1913 by Jan Evert Scholten, one of the richest Dutch people at the time. He wanted the park to be the place where everyone could go for sports, fun and relaxation.
