A hundred years ago, Storgatan was Östersund's main commercial and parade street. The large trading companies were located here, e.g. “Freskens” – Fresks and Smiths. Along Storgatan was also perhaps Östersund's most beautiful and magnificent building - the Grand Hotel. Although some have been demolished, many beautiful houses along the street remain, e.g. B. “Frimans”, one of the oldest shops on Storgatan.

ÖFBH, which operates Östersund Marina, is an association responsible for port operations in Östersund and Frösön marinas. Its aim is to promote and coordinate boating in Östersund and the surrounding area, and to promote good safety on the lake, an intact environment, education, good camaraderie and seamanship.

The tourist information center has moved and now offers its services at the corner of Storgaten and Biblioteksgatan.

After Jämtland became part of Sweden in the Peace of Brömsebro in 1645, the Swedish Queen Christina had a redoubt built at this point. The plan was for a town to be built here, which would then have been the first town in this part of Sweden. The plan failed due to revolts. Only in the 18th century did Jämtland become a city with Östersund.
