Cathedral is nice but the huge old trees are spectacular

There's a track from the loch to the free Cally Car Park set it the woods above Dunkeld.

On a practical note, it's one of the few bridges over the river in this area so it's likely a waypoint. That said, it's worth a pause to look upstream and downstream and take the obligatory photo. If you're naughty, there's a jail built into the bridge underneath.

A tree that's probably famous for being famous; it's not a glamorous healthy-looking tree but certainly a tree with history. At least stop to read the information boards when hiking past.

An excellent dirt path that's very wide in places becomes very narrow at the southern end. Watch your step: in places, the path at the river's edge has eroded and, somewhat strangely, there are plenty of raised drain covers to trip over.

A waypoint with alas a lot of scaffolding. Plenty of nice places in Dunkeld for refreshments. There's a dirt path, muddy after rain, around the east side of the Cathedral property; there's no way through the Cathedral property bounds. Dunkeld Community Archive is nearby in The Cross.

The east riverside path offers a splendid ride, predominantly on asphalt, and forms part of National Cycle Network (NCN) 77. Around Dunkeld House Hotel, the route is a shared space with vehicles. Between the hotel and Dunkeld, riders are treated to a choice between parallel paths: a slightly elevated gravel path and a lower, closer-to-the-river dirt path. Both options provide a very rideable experience. On the west riverside, there’s a dirt path that truly calls to MTB and gravel bike enthusiasts.

A nice little track along the Tay , really peaceful

A tranquil and peaceful location to take a break. It can be bustling on the street yet peaceful here. There's limited seating.

If you're planning to use Dunkeld for car parking on a sunny weekend/holiday make sure to get here early. It rapidly gets full of parked cars.

There's an old prison built into the bridge base on the east side.

Usually pass here on the very good dirt track leading from the main road up to Cally Car Park. From Cally Car Park there are paths galore to choose from. Maybe a good waypoint rather than a destination.

Plenty of seating in pleasant surroundings to rest those feet and have refreshments. Shop across the road for provisions and the theatre cafe with toilets next door.

Like the village the Cathedral has a lot of history albeit today it's mainly a ruin. More importantly there's a shared dirt path around the Cathedral allowing access to the riverside path and travel north.

In 849, relics of St Columba were removed from Iona to protect them from Viking raids. They were brought to Dunkeld by King Kenneth MacAlpin, who appointed a bishop at Dunkeld. Columba became the patron saint of Dunkeld and its monastery. The see was revived in the early 1100s, when Cormac became Bishop of Dunkeld. The cathedral developed over about 250 years, and the earliest surviving part is the choir of the late 1200s. It later became a parish church. The nave was begun in 1406, and lost its roof shortly after the Protestant Reformation of 1560. There are paintings dating from the 1500s on the vault of the bell tower’s ground floor, which once served as an ecclesiastical court. There are also fine memorials in the choir (not in our care), including the effigy of Alexander Stewart, Earl of Buchan – notorious as ‘The Wolf of Badenoch’.

Polney Loch, (also known as the Goat's Pool), lies beneath the imposing cliffs of Craig a' Barns. Close to the edge of the lochs, stealthy grey herons can often be seen waiting motionless to spear an unsuspecting fish or frog.
